Denis Mahoney Council

  • A descendant of Irish immigrants who fled the potato famine in Ireland in the mid-19th century, Denis Mahoney was born in Rockland, Ontario on May 22, 1883.
  • Mahoney spent his professional life in the retail trade, first as a store manager until 1936 and then as manager of a bakery until retiring in 1952.
  • With his wife Anna they raised 4 children: Gertrude, Margaret, Bishop James and John.
  • Mahoney served as Alderman on the Saskatoon City Council in 1924 and 1925. He was also a member of the Saskatoon Separate School Board.
  • He served in the Knights as a 4th degree member, a Grand Knight and State Deputy.
  • Denis Mahoney died in Saskatoon in 1967, one month prior to his son’s consecration as Bishop of Saskatoon.

The concepts of “Charity” and “Unity” were first adopted in 1882.

“Fraternity” and “Patriotism” were added later.
